NS: controlling mission-critical rail operations through a secure integration platform

Case study
100% Customer satisfaction. Always.
Dutch Railways (NS) operates one of the most complex, safety-critical environments in the Netherlands. Every day, millions of passengers rely on systems that must work without any exception. As trains, infrastructure and suppliers became increasingly connected, the challenge shifted. Not from building functionality, but from maintaining control. Together with Schuberg Philis, NS designed and implemented the Wayside Platform: a controlled integration layer between operational assets and the IT landscape. Enabling NS to scale connectivity without increasing risk.

NS operates software in and around moving assets, making uptime, data integrity and safety non-negotiable. As the OT ecosystem expanded, traditional point-to-point integrations became unmanageable:

  • Integrations became fragmented across suppliers and systems
  • Onboarding new suppliers introduced unpredictable risk
  • Visibility and control over the operational landscape decreased

More connections meant more exposure. The core question became: how do you enable growth in connectivity, without compromising safety, compliance, or control?
